What is Interactive Whiteboard（IWB）?
Interactive whiteboards, often referred to as smart boards, are large interactive displays that connect to a computer or mobile device, allowing users to manipulate digital content using touch, pen, or stylus input.
Xerox PARC designed and manufactured the first interactive whiteboard in 1990. The interactive whiteboard was initially designed for office use but ultimately found big success in the education sector.
During the initial two decades of interactive whiteboard development, SMART board emerged as the most successful brand. They effectively introduced this product to the education sector, driving changes in both teaching methods and educational equipment. SMART Technologies also became the world’s first company to go public with interactive whiteboard as its primary product (On July 15, 2010, SMART Technologies debuted on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), raising over $660 million).
An interactive whiteboard system is not just a simple whiteboard, it consists of several hardware components: a whiteboard with interactive functions, a PC(Laptop/OPS), and a projector. The projector is connected to the PC (Laptop/OPS) via HDMI or VGA, and the PC and whiteboard are connected via USB.
Since 2008, with the widespread availability of short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors in the market, the issue of projected light obstructing interactive whiteboards has been effectively addressed. This led to a rapid expansion in the global demand for interactive whiteboards, accelerating the maturity of the entire industry.
Starting from 2017, the declining prices of large LCDs, like 75-inch and even 86-inch Interactive Flat Panel Displays (IFPDs), have made them more cost-effective compared to complete electronic whiteboard (IWB) systems. Consequently, IFPDs have increasingly replaced IWBs, with many schools now prioritizing IFPDs for their interactive teaching needs.
